Whether you want to
broaden your literary horizons or revisit some old favorites, we invite
you to take part in an amazing journey that spans two centuries and four
continents. The diverse settings, plots, themes, and styles of six of
the world’s great classics will provide the basis for rich discussion of
the different social, economic, political and cultural forces that shape
each work, and at the same time, help us to identify the common threads
of humanity that run through all of them. We will examine the
psychological, moral-philosophical, and mythical/archetypal/symbolic
significance of the works through the lenses of several different
schools of modern critical interpretation including Deconstruction,
Marxism, Feminism, New Historicism, Post-Structuralism, Reader-Response,
and Postcolonialism, as we work toward the goal of gaining greater
insight into the ways in which the forces of time and place shape and
mold both the individual and collective psyche. As we progress through
the course, we will also identify the recurring qualities that elevate
these particular works to the status of “classics”.
