Intensive Introduction to Opera
Vocal Technique / Singing
Marla Volovna is a world-renowned voice
teacher whose students have repeatedly achieved the highest honors,
including both 1st and 2nd place winners in the Metropolitan Opera
Competition. Both mezzo-soprano and opera director,
Marla Volovna made her operatic debut in Besancon, France, as Adalgisa
in Bellini's Norma. She has performed the Verdi Requiem in Paris
and Bordeaux, radio broadcasts of Mahler's Kindertoten Lieder in France
and Darius Milhaud's Return of the Prodigal Son for the RAI, Italian
radio. In France, her operatic roles include Olga and Filipievna
in Tschaikowsky's Eugene Onegin, Taven in Gounod's Mireille, Fenena in
Verdi's Nabucco. In Ireland Ms. Volovna has performed the title
role in Bononcini's Astarto and Nancy in Fowtow's Martha at the Dublin
Opera. In the United States Ms. Volovna has performed the roles of
Baba, in Stravinsky's Rake's Progress, the Mother in Menotti's Amahl and
the Night Visitors in Indiana, Carmen in Bizet's Carmen, the Witch in
Humperdink's Hansel and Gretel, Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni with the
Apollo Opera, Adah in Victor Herbert's Naughty Marietta and the Second
Lady in Mozart's Magic Flute with the Utah Festival Opera. Ms.
Volovna has also toured Russia and the Ukraine with the roles of Fricka
(Das Rheingold, Die Wallkyre), Erda (Die Wallkyre), Walltraute (Gotterdamerung),
Carmen, Adalgisa in Norma, Pauline in Tschaikowsky’s Pique Dame and
Marfa in Mussorgsky’s Kovanschina. Ms.Volovna is a frequent
soloist and director with the Apollo Opera. Among the operas that
Ms. Volovna directed for the company, Carmen, Madame Butterfly and
Rigoletto received outstanding acclaim.
