In this hands-on course, you learn the basic principles of interior
design and begin to draw and draft your ideas, blending creative
expression with practical application. Understand the aesthetic,
functional, and psychological considerations that give interiors their
character and study key design principles, including space planning and
design composition, furniture layouts and planning, the application of
color, and the use of materials. Explore the elements of design (color,
texture, materials, pattern, and light) as applied to interiors, develop
basic drafting skills, and learn how designers take projects from
concept to completion. You develop a foundation for understanding the
design process, and for cultivating your ability to think through design
problems. The second-half of this course deals with our relation to
space, form, and environment. Emphasis is on how human factors influence
design, applying design principles to projects of varying scale,
materials, and structures. Continue to develop and expand your ability
to tackle the challenges of more complex design issues through an
analysis and consideration of professional design problems. Emphasis is
placed on spatial problem-solving. Furniture systems and types of
storage are researched. Application of color, materials, and finishes
are studied and employed in corporate and residential projects. Slide-illustrated lectures and discussions help you develop an awareness
of the basic principles of design and aesthetics by studying the work of
past and present designers and architects. Explore and develop your
creativity while learning the principles of balance, harmony, rhythm,
emphasis, contrast, and proportion and how these principles interact
with the elements of scale, form, color, and texture.
