This course is intended as a follow up to
Principles of Drawing and Painting. Our main focus will be oil and
acrylics on canvas, but students will also have the opportunity to
further their individual development in the media of their choice,
including pencil, charcoal, crayons, watercolor, mixed media, and
others, under the guidance of the instructor. Students will start to
master the methods and techniques of form, tone, color and color mixing,
brush strokes, glazing, scumbling, light and shade, perspective,
composition, and human proportion, as they become skilled in the
preparation and use of all tools and supplies, including brushes,
knives, palettes, oils, painting preparation,
canvas stretching, sizing, priming,
etc.. Exercises will be introduced to students in structured lessons
supplemented by practical demonstrations. We will paint still lifes,
portraits, and landscapes in the styles of realism, semi abstract, and
abstract, and will view and discuss the techniques and styles of various
historical and contemporary artists toward the goal of developing a
personal vision and style.
At the end of the ten weeks, students will
-
possess a thorough understanding of the
supplies and materials used in oil, acrylic, and other media (as per
student interest).
-
have the ability to consider and select
appropriate sources/subjects for their paintings' content.
-
have the ability to determine
composition and construct a painting with a comfortable knowledge of
space (proportion, perspective, balance, etc.) and color (mixing,
shades, light and dark, etc.).
-
independently
create oil and acrylic paintings from preparation to finish.
-
properly
critique and discuss their own paintings and those of other artists.
