This course is an interactive learning environment that combines basic
theory with real-time coaching practice to teach the most up-to-date
skills, methods, and techniques being applied in the field of
professional coaching today. We will start by defining the
practice of coaching and differentiating it from counseling,
psychotherapy, consulting, and training, as we uncover the realities of
modern society which have placed it among the fastest growing career
fields in the world. Students will have an opportunity to apply
what is learned in a variety of coaching situations, including life
coaching, business/executive coaching, relationship coaching, and
others, as we explore a diverse range of coaching methods, including the
GROW coaching methodology, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and the
Integral Coaching method, which seeks to address the whole person in a
coaching situation. We will employ a variety of classroom
methodologies, including lecture, case study, large and small group
work, and a range of exercises and activities, in order to help students
gain a first-hand knowledge of what works and what doesn't in the
practice of effective coaching. Step by step exercises will enable
students to practice and improve the skills to be applied before,
during, and after coaching sessions. Such skills include:
Listening:
Students will learn to develop active listening skills and other related
skills, such as reflecting feelings, asking questions, and providing
feedback.
Setting Goals and Developing a Plan of Action:
Learn to create your own coaching goals and an agenda for each coaching
session, as well as how to help clients set goals that are Smart
as they develop an attainable vision for their life. Technologies
such as the Ultimate Success Formula and Precision will be
utilized in the creation of comprehensive plans of action.
Psychological and Behavioral Technologies:
We will learn to apply theory and practice drawn from psychology and
behavioral science to help people carry out sustainable change in their
lives. A broad range of styles and methods, from cognitive therapy
to NLP, from emotional intelligence to Eastern psychology, will be
discussed so that students can develop a range of tools to be applied
toward the goal of helping clients overcome limiting behaviors and
beliefs.
Understanding the Self as Coach:
A coach must possess a good sense of self in order to operate
effectively in a coaching relationship. This requires that he or
she understands the 'blind spots', judgments, prejudices, biases, and
self-interests that interfere with effective coaching.
We will also cover the following:
Directive and non-directive language
Developing rapport and connection within a coaching relationship
Using intuition
Toward the end of the ten weeks, the instructor will provide input on
how to apply the learned skills in a variety of personal and
professional settings and offer valuable tips on building a career as a
coach, including how to create your own coaching identity, marketing
one's services, and developing a business plan for private practice.
