The Principles of Digital Filmmaking
Intensive Workshop (suitable for beginner to experienced students)
Taught by Victor Muh

No matter what anybody tells you, filmmaking has gone digital. This
revolution did not begin in the Hollywood studios. It began at the
consumer level. With the advent of the Digital Video format (DV) and
high-speed data connections like Firewire, video camera manufacturers
had created what they thought would be a great digital video format
for amateur video enthusiasts the world over. Little did they know
that forward-thinking filmmakers would embrace this new technology to
create films that would rival those shot on 35mm film, the industry
standard. Today, more and more of what we see on the silver screen is
shot with digital or is digitized shortly after it's captured on film.

First and foremost, this workshop will get you up and running as a
digital filmmaker. You will learn how to capture (shoot), input (into
a computer), edit and output (onto tape, DVD, or for the internet)
using principles that are common to all cameras and editing systems.
(This is not intended to be a system, software or hardware-specific
workshop.)

Once you have an understanding of the basic digital filmmaking
process, we'll go back and look at each step in more detail, and
include preproduction (preparing a project to be produced).

This workshop will teach you how to improve your technique and get
the most out of your digital camcorder (DV or HDV) by providing
valuable insights into camera operation, manual camera controls,
shutter speeds, apertures and focal lengths, frame composition,
lighting controls, and accessories. We will also cover preparation,
choosing your gear, relating efficiently with production members and
others, and getting the most out of the topic you are shooting. You
will gain an understanding of professional practices for a short
dramatic narrative, documentary, news, experimental, or music video
for possible submission to a festival or competition.
