Our main focus will be oil and acrylics on canvas, but students will also have the opportunity to further their individual development in the media of their choice, including pencil, charcoal, crayons, watercolor, mixed media, and others, under the guidance of the instructor. Students will start to master the methods and techniques of form, tone, color and color mixing, brush strokes, glazing, scumbling, light and shade, perspective, composition, and human proportion, as they become skilled in the preparation and use of all tools and supplies, including brushes, knives, palettes, oils, painting preparation, canvas stretching, sizing, priming, etc.. Exercises will be introduced to students in structured lessons supplemented by practical demonstrations. We will paint still lifes, portraits, and landscapes in the styles of realism, semi abstract, and abstract, and will view and discuss the techniques and styles of various historical and contemporary artists toward the goal of developing a personal vision and style.
