Intensive Introduction (suitable for beginner to intermediate students)
Taught by: Matthew Niederhauser
Boris Austin

Cultivate a personal and innovative style while exploring a wide
range of photographic mediums. This course aims to introduce students
to varied areas of photography so that they can take their work in
new directions. Even those with no photographic background can take
part. Multiple camera formats will be introduced in order to pick a
system that is best suited to the individual. Established photographers
will hone their skills and seek different outlets for their creative
abilities. Depending on student input the following topics will be
covered:

Introduction to camera formats and accessories: digital, 35mm, medium-
format, SLR, point-and-shoot, lomography, lenses
Camera control: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, histogram
Film and digital file management: storage, importing, hardware.
Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop & Bridge: basic editing and organizing, slideshows, exporting websites.
Alternative film processing methods.
Off-camera flash: metering, studio
lighting, Digital and film printing solutions.

By the end of the course everyone should feel confident working in a
number of photographic mediums and establish a technique that best
suits their personal vision. Readings and assignments will also be
provided along with regular in-class critiques. Students are
encouraged to develop their own projects throughout the course and
challenge themselves to cultivate new perspectives on their
surrounding environment. China has a lot to offer for
photographers, this is an opportunity not only to develop a specific project but to consider how you would like to present your work: whether creating an online slideshow or designing a photo book to be printed. Advice on equipment purchases can be provided or bring along whatever equipment you already own.

This course will also include a wealth of invaluable learning materials such as Photography E-Books, Videos and Software which will be provided throughout the course and can be taken with you at the end of ten weeks.
