We will teach you all you need to look and feel groovy on the dance floor! This course is ideal for enthusiasts with some dance experience and those who enjoy dancing socially. Both individuals and couples can join. As the counts for the male and the female steps are different, they will be taught individually and then couples will come together periodically to combine these steps and form sequenced routines. There are four dance forms of Latin American that you will be learning throughout the course. CHA CHA This is flashy, full of energy and up beat! Body movements are all from the rib cage down with an exaggerated hip action. The dancer’s weight is often transferred from the back to the front foot. The counts are to a fast 4 step pace in the form 2, 3, 4 AND 1… The movements we will learn are: The Starter Step Progressive Basic Side Basic (Box) Cross Over Breaks Chases Cross Over Breaks with Arch, with Double Turns and with Palm to Palm Chases with Half Turns and with Full Turns JIVE This is similar to rock ’n’ roll. It is energetic and fast paced, and routines are more flamboyant by including basic lifts. The dancer’s movement is more in the knees and ankles, thus hip motion is not as pronounced. The upper body is calm with an upright posture and the weight is more on the balls of the feet. The counts are to a fast 8 step pace in the form 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8… The movements we will develop are Fallaway Rock American Spin Change of Hands Behind Back The Walks RUMBA This is known as the dance of love. The technique is similar to the CHA CHA but is danced to slow paced lyrical music and is performed with even more exaggerated hip movements. The counts are the same as for the CHA CHA. The movements we will explore are Basic Shoulder to shoulder Open break New York break Underarm turns Spot turns SAMBA This originates from Brazil and is known as the carnival dance, as it is popular during street festivals. Samba is contagious and has a rhythm that even provokes non dancers to get up and dance! The counts are to a fast 8 step pace in the form 1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6, 7 & 8 AND… The movements we will refine are Forward and Back Under Arm Turns Turn From Basic Turn From Open Break As this is a group course, you are encouraged to work with all other members of the class. This helps you to get to know the group and facilitates your ability to dance with a wider range of partners. Upon completion of this course, everyone will have an opportunity to perform these flashy routines on stage to an audience! Here, you will have the chance to show off all that you have learned within the 4 styles.
