This is an interactive course where students will gain first-hand experience through instruction, case studies, exercises and activities, role-play, analysis and assessment, feedback and discussion. One of the main goals of counseling is to help people to gain a practical understanding of themselves and their circumstances in order to effectuate positive change. To do this, the counselor him/herself must attain a certain level of self-awareness and understanding which includes an ability to identify the "blind spots", judgments, prejudices, biases, and self-interests that interfere with being an effective counselor. Over the course of the ten weeks, students will learn a variety of counseling methods, including the humanistic approach, cognitive therapy, systemic counseling, and the psychodynamic approach. Skills that will be developed include listening effectively and reflectively, building a rapport of trust and openness that fosters two-way communication, developing an empathic mind state, providing useful feedback and advice, and understanding and extending people's perspectives. Students will also learn to create a case formulation identifying key problems a client faces, and to design an appropriate treatment plan focused on achieving specific goals. Techniques for effectively teaching psychological skills and technologies to clients will also be covered.
