We will cover the techniques of clay modeling including shaping and molding, wedging, joining, pinching, coiling and slabbing, building, mark and surface. Our focus will be on the human figure, molding our clay sculpture directly from a live model in order to study the human form in its various spatial positions (standing, sitting, reclining, etc.), with renderings of the head, torso, hands, and feet. You will become skilled in the techniques of clay modeling, mold making, plaster casting, armature building from concept to finish. We will follow the process of sculpting in clay, followed by the construction of plaster molds, which are then filled with wet plaster. Later, the mold is broken off leaving your plaster sculpture. This is a comprehensive introduction including drawing for sculpture, basic anatomy, observation, modeling, gesture, proportion, plane, shape, volume, line, mass, texture, portraiture, the use of calipers, armatures, mold making, and finishing. You will gain a confident command of the materials, tools, principles, and elements of traditional sculpture with an emphasis on creativity. At the end of the 10 weeks, you will have completed at-least two sculptures while gaining the knowledge and skills to source and undertake the entire process on your own.
