Writing Workshop
"Literature records the depths and
heights of the human experience. It can develop compassion by educating
the heart as well as the mind. It can help children entertain new ideas,
develop insights they never had before. It can stretch the imagination,
creating new experiences, enriching old ones. It can develop a sense of
what is true and just and beautiful."
-- Charlotte Huck
This is a unique course that starts with a fascinating journey through
several classics in children’s literature and blossoms into a hands-on
children’s fiction-writing workshop. From Hans Christian Andersen to
Harry Potter, we will examine the visions these works present of
childhood, of the world, philosophy, sociology, ideology, and morality. These literary treasures contain the imagery and symbolism, the
archetypes and motifs that speak to the universal human endeavor -- our
passions, virtues and vices, socially constructed views of aesthetics,
etc. -- helping us to understand ourselves and the world we live in. The
writing workshop portion of the class covers the many facets of creating
a fictional space that is compelling and unique, whether in fairytale or
fable, short story or novel. Students will have the opportunity to
write, revise, and receive feedback within a supportive environment as
we explore the possibilities of structure, narrative, plot, theme,
characterization, setting and illustration. Suitable for both the novice
and the experienced writer, this course includes lively discussions on
literary technique and style, stimulating creative activities,
imaginative writing exercises, and insights into the world of
children’s-book publishing from an experienced editor and writer.
