Intensive Introduction (suitable for

The goal of this course is for
students to gain a broad practical knowledge of black and white
photography and darkroom techniques. Our emphasis will be on
photography and building a portfolio rather than in-depth black and
white printing techniques. Students will produce a portfolio
of well-printed black and white enlargements from negatives while
working on a chosen project or theme. Teaching methods will
include analysis of images, hands on workshops, and darkroom practice.
Most of this class will take place in the darkroom with some exceptions
for slideshows and discussions of works by notable photographers and
their use of lighting and contrast, high and low key images, etc..
We will also cover buying, upgrading, and making the most of your
equipment and supplies, processing black-and-white film, storage of
negatives, preparation and use of chemicals, filters, various film
types, making contact and basic test prints, grades, dodging and
burning, editing from test prints (and formulating a cohesive body of
work), using the aperture and split grading, portfolio options and the
storage of prints, fiber-based papers, toning prints, and more.
Students should bring a film camera -- with manual adjustments for
focusing, metering, and exposure -- with them to the first session, or
be prepared to purchase (or borrow) one after consultation with the
instructor (this does not need to be an expensive, or even new, camera,
and the instructors can recommend equipment and dealers both new and
used). Chemicals will be provided, and students will learn how and
where to buy papers and films for individual use.
