Intensive Introduction (suitable for

This very intensive course
is as much a film project as it is a course. Each student will
work under the supervision of the instructor to create a their own
sequence, which will become part of a 3-minute film that will later be
submitted to the Annecy Animation Film Festival in France as well as
other animation festivals under the university name. Every
student's name will appear in the credits, and the instructor will be
credited as director.
Animation history, theory, and its basic principles and practices will
be taught through instruction, analysis of animation footage (with
emphasis on experimental and author films), and visits to local Shanghai
animation studios. Differing styles will be covered before
students select the medium of their choice: drawing, clay, or puppets.
The theory taught in the classroom will be applied directly by each
student in the homework assignment under the guidance of the instructor
in the capacity of art and film director. This course is only for
committed students who are able to dedicate a considerable amount of
time to their portion of the project in between classes. The class
will function as a real-world animation studio paralleling the standard
working process in the industry.
Techniques covered will include traditional drawn animation on paper,
pixilation, stop motion, and others with the use of real actors and
objects such as clay-mation or puppets shot frame by frame with a
digital camera. The frames will then be captured with software
such as Premiere, Mirage, or Flash, or processed with Photoshop.
Student requirements:
- a good digital camera if you choose to animate with clay or puppets
- a scanner if you choose to do traditional animation on paper
- a computer equipped at least with a Pentium 4 / a Mac G 4
